Carolynn: You weren’t doing anything…unusual, right?

Keira, incredulously: …No, mom. Nothing ‘unusual’ happened. Just a NORMAL day for your NORMAL daughter.

Keira’s mom flinches visibly before turning back around, her face hidden and shoulders shaking slightly. The remnants of dinner and a glass of wine are on the side table next to the couch, and half-unpacked moving boxes are stacked and scattered throughout the room.

Carolynn: W-Well, ah, be sure to clean up before bed, alright? There’s a plate for you in the fridge i-if…if you’re hungry.

Keira, with intense scorn and a little sarcasm: THANKS.

Keira's disappointed in Carolynn - she sees her mom's careful question and evasion as caring more about the appearances of things than with actually having an honest conversation (which is par the course for their communication skills as a family, but we'll get into that much later in the story).
