He sees Keira standing back by her seat, gripping the strap of her messenger back and looking at him with confusion and a little bit of hurt. Garrett turns away once more, his pained determination hidden from her view.

He passes Erin in the doorway on his way out. She greets Keira with a cheerful grin and a wave.

Erin: Hey Keira! How did it go?

Before Keira can even think about drawing Garrett’s attention, the teacher arrives.

Teacher: Okay Kids! Class is starting, so find your seats!

He sets down his coffee and case, then pulls out a few documents and looks them over.

Teacher: It seems we have a transfer student. Why don’t you come up and introduce yourself?

Keira, startled to have attention called to her so quickly, panics.

Keira: M-Me?

Teacher, dryly: Are you the transfer student?

Keira: Well, yeah, but-

Teacher: Come on then! We haven’t got all day!

Keira makes her way through the classroom, completely unnoticed by her peers killing time until class starts. She finds an agreeable spot and takes a seat, her eyes glued to her desk.

Irene: Oh! Keira, look!

She looks up and around at Irene’s command. There, across the room, she recognizes someone chatting with a group of classmates. His face lights up with a warm, familiar smile.

Keira: It’s Garrett!

Keira chases after Abby so as to not be left behind as they enter their new school.

Keira: Wait up, Abby!

The girls make their way to the main office, where they receive their schedules and wait for their student guides. They sit apart from each other in silence. Keira studies her schedule while Abby talks to her guide.

???: Keira Manders, right?

Keira looks up from her schedule with a nervous, introduction-ready smile.

Keira: That’s me!
